Nick Picking – 5/15/13

Another light week leading into the start of summer. Only two real standouts for me this time:

Review – Angel Stadium!

2013-05-16 18.28.47

This week my girlfriend and I didn’t end up visiting any food trucks. Instead she came down to visit and we went and watched the Angels piss away a game against the White Sox. Angel Stadium has always held a special place in my heart being born and raised in South Orange County. It’s been through some rough spots and a bunch of ownership changes, the Big A as it’s affectionately referred to has really brought up its game.

I’m a big believer in stadium dogs. I mean you just have to, right? It’s downright un-American to not shove some sort of processed meat into my face at a sporting event. I’ve been slowly trying out all the fare at Angel stadium and the second dog I wound up sampling was the BBQ brisket hot dog (and a shared side of garlic-parmesean fries):

Technology is conspiring against me…

IT’S A METAPHOR

So some good news and some bad news. The good news is my motherboard got replaced so my PC is back up and running! The bad news is my PS3 yellow lighted (and I’m in no real hurry to replace it because Sony has the most retarded copy protection on their HDDs) and my phone, an HTC One X through AT&T is on the fritz. For the fourth fucking time.

So at the very least I’ll be getting out plenty of written content as well as a podcast I’ve been working on with a close friend AND some video footage as my first semester of culinary school ends next week!

GAH.

Can’t help but Marvel…

So I finally read through the eleven issues of Captain Marvel I had sitting in my short box. I had picked them up for the online gender class I was enrolled in because 1) digital comics are for SQUARES and 2) there’s a certain satisfaction in finding single issues that you’re searching for (I assume like a junkie feels). Fast forward to now and my motherboard is out for repair and I haven’t been keeping up so I let these issues fall on the wayside (Ms. Marvel #1 too!). But one thing I couldn’t help but notice were the marvelous Marvels and their marvelous…powers.

marvel2 marvel1Ahem.

In all seriousness I’ve really enjoyed Captain Marvel and am planning on adding it to my pull at Phat Collectibles. Plus it featured a personal favorite character of mine: Monica Rambeau! My exposure to her was through the surprisingly awesome Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. by Warren Ellis. Add her to the long list of tertiary characters that I wind up liking because of surprisingly good writing. I actually plan on doing a write up in the near future and I should thank Sean Ian Mills over at Henchman 4 Hire for turning me towards this surprisingly good title. Carol Davers has quickly become a person of interest in my Marvel universe.

Nick Picking – 5/8/13

Sorry I’m late this week! I hate not having a computer so content is going to be coming in chunks until my motherboard gets back. ANYWAY. I read some comics this week and I’m sure you did too!

Review – Meet n’ Potatoes

I might be late but I still went to eat at the food trucks on Thursday! Now last week we headed out to the Pomona Fairplex for their trucks but this week they were not hosting an event. Instead we headed out to Freddy’s Food Court in Covina to see what was up. There were around six trucks that day, a mix of Asian fusion, barbeque, and then the truck my girlfriend and I went to: Meet n’ Potatoes.

Who wouldn't want to come check this truck out?

Cooking with Grandma! Round 2

Back again with another segment of cooking with grandma! Today we made a simple pork tonkastsu recipe that my family has been enjoying for years. This recipe is simple and easy to make, only requiring a handful of ingredients. What we worked with today: boneless pork loin, flour, eggs, panko bread crumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and some sort of milk (nonfat all the way to heavy creamer!)

The first thing that needs to be taken care of is the meat. Each pork medallion is going to be pretty well covered in fat along its edges. All you need to do is take a small knife and trim all the white stuff off as best you can (it doesn’t need to look perfect since we’re breading it!) and then take each medallion and bisect it horizontally so we now have two small sized medallions of pork. Next take a meat mallet and pound the pork out to uniform size so that they all cook evenly (and I have a crappy oven so its a pretty major concern). Next we need to prep them for cooking!

Saturday Showdown at Alex’s Arcade!

So today the OCC Gamer’s Guild put on an Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament over at Alex’s Arcade in Santa Ana. This was my first time working a tournament and it wasn’t without it’s problems. The first thing we ran into was the Roxio game capture was only compatible with component cables and every system was outfitted for HDMI. Enter: the Avermedia LGP C875.
